Do you want to know where the publishing industry is going? How you can create new revenue streams? How you can use innovation to transform challenges into opportunities? The publishing sector is facing unprecedented change: rapid advances in technology, free content, new competitors – to name but a few. We need new approaches.

New approaches

Publish! A Day of Innovation on the Future of the Book will showcase pioneering new work, provide insight into the future and explore potential new revenue streams. Prominent thinkers and doers will spark debate and present their ground-breaking projects, supported by expert panels and the latest research, showing you how you can harness inspirational ideas and create new opportunities and sources of income. It is part of a wider programme with five key approaches:

1: Making new products and services

We want to do more than just talk. The programme will provide practical solutions and create new products. For instance, the hackdays are intense, rapid development environments where teams made up of technologists, designers and content creators will respond to publishers’ challenges.

2: Giving insight into the future

We are serious about the future. Many initiatives claim to be talking about the future but they’re actually talking about what’s happening now. We will create a real focus on the future by involving forecasters drawing on solid trends research that reveals potential consumer needs.

3: SHowcasing and promoting innovation

We want to inspire with real innovation. The programme will showcase publishing innovators and disruptive projects that are pushing forward the possibilities of publishing, and facilitating commercial success.

4: Exploring new revenue streams

We are interested in commercial success and the bottom line. The programme will confront the key issue for publishers: how to survive, generate new revenue streams, and flourish by taking advantage of the potential of new technology.

5: Facilitating cross-sector partnerships

We want to look outwards. The programme will help the publishing industry learn from the way others industries innovate. And it will ask, how can the publishing industry collaborate with other industries to create exciting new products?

Media Futures Conferences

This is the third Media Futures programme, following the Media and Innovation conference with the BBC, and Beyond Broadcast with Bloomberg and the Press Association.

The Publish! event and the Future of Publishing programme are produced in partnership with Cyprus Well and Plymouth University, powered by NESTA, and supported by the Creative Industries iNet, which is part of the Government’s Solutions for Business portfolio, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and led by South West Screen.
